The British Film Institute (BFI) approached us with a complex challenge: to help address systemic issues across the UK’s screen industry, from poor working conditions to mental health struggles and work–life balance. With multiple stakeholders and perspectives to unite, including legal experts, psychologists, and industry professionals, the solution needed to be transformative, practical, and above all, user-focused. A digital platform would sit at the heart of this change, designed to evolve as the sector itself does.
We designed, built, and branded WorkWise for Screen – an innovative, user-first online platform that gives the screen industries a practical and inclusive resource for lasting change. Balancing input from legal specialists, educational partners, and industry leaders, the platform delivers practical tools, guidance, and training while creating a space for collaboration and community. From legal templates to e-learning modules, every feature is crafted to be accessible, relevant, and engaging for professionals across production, animation, and VFX.
This was a project of coordination as much as design. Working with partners including Counterculture LLP, National Lottery, and Edinburgh Napier University, we aligned a wide range of voices to a single shared purpose. Our approach put user needs first, translating complex legal, psychological, and cultural insight into clear, practical digital tools. By maintaining a dialogue with stakeholders throughout, we ensured the platform was not only comprehensive but scalable for future growth.
The platform combines robust resources with interactive features that encourage ongoing engagement. Users can access fair contracting guidance, explore mental wellbeing support, or join peer-to-peer networks that build community and accountability. By weaving together expert content with user-led interaction, WorkWise for Screen moves beyond static resources to create a living, responsive ecosystem of support.
Our design approach was shaped by accessibility and inclusivity at every stage. A clean, intuitive interface ensures the platform works for diverse user groups, while a bold, contemporary visual identity reflects the energy of the screen industries themselves. The result is a digital space that feels authoritative without being intimidating, practical without being dry, and inclusive without compromise.
WorkWise for Screen demonstrates the power of digital to bring together fragmented perspectives and drive systemic improvement. By creating a platform that balances practicality with empathy, we’ve helped the BFI and its partners take a decisive step toward healthier, fairer, and more sustainable working cultures across the screen sector.
